IT’S LAUGHABLE REALLY – IF IT WEREN’T SO SERIOUS.
If we were to put ourselves in the position that the New Zealanders faced in the early 1800s, smack bang in the middle of a genocidal civil war with the likely hood of foreign invasion, I only hope that a bigger and better power would come to our rescue, particularly if we asked them.
Any rescue would likely require us to cede whatever nominal sovereignty that was left via a treaty, a guarantee that whatever we ‘legally’ owned before the treaty we still owned after it (property rights) and a promise that we would all have equal rights the same as the people from the new power, via the new law.
Could you imagine the new power agreeing via a treaty that they could only govern and make laws for their own people and that we (the rescued) could carry on lawless and do as we bloody well please. Not only that, if the new power did anything at all to prevent us doing as we bloody well please we could demand that they give us millions of dollars and vast tracts of land and extra rights as compensation.
It’s laughable really.
However, ones things for sure, if they left us to our own lawless ways without expecting us to improve our behaviour we would register badly in all the negative measures of society.
