COUNCIL HALTS WORK AFTER HAPŪ CRIES FOULRoad works in Ōngarue have been halted to protect a sacred burial site. Members of Ngati Raerae are upset at what they view as a lack of respect from the Ruapehu District Council, after earth works were done on a section of Ōngarue-Waimiha Road. Two koiwi [skeletal remains] are thought to be in the area and the hapū is now in discussions with council to safeguard the site. A karakia was placed on the site by kaumatua when they heard news of the earth works..... www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/news/ruapehu-press/97196062/council-halts-work-after-hap-cries-foul
