HAMILTON MAYOR WITHDRAWS BID TO CHANGE NAME TO KIRIKIRIROAHamilton Mayor Andrew King has withdrawn his proposal to rename the council Kirikiriroa City Council after widespread public opposition. His decision was greeted with obvious relief by the majority of councillors. Geoff Taylor said: "Andrew I think you did the right thing withdrawing it today. "I feel sorry for you because you have taken a bit of flak over the last couple of days." Taylor said King should have spoken with the other elected members before adding such a proposal to a meeting agenda..... www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12013124

I heard on the lame radio NZ news that the main reason for the opposition was the cost! I suspect that is not right but radio NZ is so maorified now that they would be terrified to say anything, truthful or otherwise, against their maori loving bosses. I think most people are sick of the greedy maori "I want this , I want that" attitude and the real main reason is simply they do not want a perfectly good English name to be replaced by a confusing, possibly made up maori name. Simple.

Maybe it was more to do with this 'Second Class Citizen'? A VICTORY FOR RATEPAYERS IN HAMILTON Yesterday, we (NZ Taxpayers Union Inc) were in Hamilton with our mascot "Porky the Waste Hater" to present our ratepayers' petition here > tinyurl.com/y8zj2as2 calling on the Mayor to dump his expensive proposal to change the Hamilton City Council's name to "Kirkiriroa City Council". We launched the petition only 36 hours earlier and it had attracted more than 1,500 signatures by the time we arrived in Hamilton. In the context of a Council PLANNING A RATES HIKE OF 20% OVER TWO YEARS, we say the Council should be finding ways to save ratepayer money, not wasting tens, or even hundreds, of thousands on a name change and rebrand. When Stratford District Council changed just their logo, it cost local ratepayers $65,000 - and Hamilton City Council is 15 times larger. At the conclusion of our presentation to Councillors we asked: "Cases like this pose the question, if this is what you do with ratepayers’ money in the light of day, then what are you doing when we're not looking?" It is fair to say that Mayor Andrew King was NOT happy with the attention and our presence. He wouldn’t even talk to us, or address our submission on his personal proposal. OUR EFFORTS – MORE THAN 1,500 SIGNATURES IN ONLY 36 HOURS – MEANT THE MAYOR DIDN’T EVEN HAVE A COUNCILLOR TO SECOND HIS MOTION. NOT EVEN ONE. He withdrew the proposal soon after we presented the petition. You can read about the meeting on the NZ Herald website.
