A BIG Congratulations …
The PRELIMINARY referendum results for the five local bodies that had decided to unilaterally introduce Maori wards, and were challenged by local electors, have now been released. In each case, the decision to establish Maori wards was defeated:
In Kaikoura 80 percent of voters were opposed, in the Western Bay of Plenty 78 percent were opposed, in Manawatu 77 percent were opposed, in Palmerston North 69 percent were opposed, and in Whakatane 56 percent were opposed.
The over-riding message from all of this is that New Zealanders do not want local government defined by race. A BIG congratulations to all of those New Zealanders who helped those communities achieve their landmark results!
