TREATY MOTIVATIONS WERE.....
M G writes > I have sat in front of the ToW as displayed in Te Papa. If you stare at something long enough you start to see things that aren't there, your mind creates things in the gaps. Some artworks play this trick of the mind.
However no matter how long I stare I can't see anything about partnership.
What is clear is we all have equal rights as British subjects and Maori did cede sovereignty to the British Crown.
Having read up on this, motivations were;
1 Some Ngapuhi chiefs had been to London and had seen the British Empire, a world they never imagined existed, and decided they needed to join up.
2 They wanted the British Army to stop inter tribal warfare and genocide which to this day still scars Maori, and
3 If they didn't sign the French were on their way and Napoleonic Law and firepower was a lot less kind than British Common Law.
Where genuine grievance exists, settle those claims, otherwise we need to wrap up the ToW process, abolish its bureaucracy, and all of us just get on with our lives with equal rights and opportunities.
