CHARITY ENCOURAGES DISCRIMINATION‘Variety’ says it gives disadvantaged Kiwi kids the childhood they deserve. It identifies the needy, but then asks donors to choose a child to support by ethnicity, gender and age. Those who won’t discriminate do have the choice of sponsoring the reject – the child who’s been on the waiting list the longest. There is no valid reason for this. There’s no need to ensure cultural compatibility. The sponsorship is purely financial. There is no face-to-face contact, and any communication can only be made through Variety “to respect the (recipient) family’s privacy”. Encouraging discrimination amongst needy Kiwi kids seems incredibly distasteful, unethical and just plain wrong. No doubt Variety’s overall intentions are very worthy, but perhaps ‘Variety’ needs to think again – what do readers think? heartlink.variety.org.nz/findchild/
