B C writes > EARLY NEW ZEALAND NATIVES DIDN'T HAVE A SINGLE WRITTEN LANGUAGE.
The dialect was written down phonetically by either European people who spoke the regional dialect or by literate natives (who of course, spoke English). Like the New Zealand accent, pronunciation will have changed in all languages.
The present day native can be thankful for the Europeans for preserving their language as it was spoken.
The present day part native (or errant mayor of Wellington) who push for a unilateral pronunciation are just politically motivated radicals trying to force their dialect (as it may sound today) onto all maoridom.
I don't understand why the local maori don't tell them to eff off (along with the rest of New Zealand).
