FICTIONAL MAORI PRE COLONIAL HISTORY
D W writes > For some reason this fictional Maori pre colonial history has become the norm in NZ.
I haven't seen it anywhere else in the world.
Go to Africa and they have authentic accounts of pre colonial life.
Shaka Zulu and other kings would be good examples, where they slaughtered their own people for little reason using some really terrible brutal means. The history of the American Indians has plenty of stories of tribal warfare, slavery and torture. Even in England the tales of violent battles between kings, people being hung, drawn and quartered, museums full of old torture devices are all there.
But for some reason in NZ people are ashamed of their ancient history, which was no more brutal or unusual than that which went on all over the world. Nailing offenders to a cross to die a lingering death is a harsh punishment, but nobody has tried to deny it happened.
Yet the fictional accounts for NZ deny there was any slavery, cannibalism, warfare, or the like and all of this was only introduced by colonists.
Some of these tales they come up with are so fantastic it's amazing that any intelligent person would give them any credibility at all.
For example pre colonial Maori knowing that some birds fly non stop to Siberia and can find their way back because they swallow a magnetic stone from a NZ harbour which tells them which direction to go.
The ancestors of Maori never lived very far north of the equator, so would have no knowledge of the Arctic regions let alone about a NZ bird flying there.
