BUILDING CULTURE IN TĀMAKI MAKAURAUBefore Auckland was named Auckland, it was Tāmaki Makaurau. Māori lived on the isthmus for hundreds of years before Pākehā arrived, building pā on its volcanic cones and prospering on its fertile network of waterways. ....and prior to 1840, maori were eating each other in Auckland. Murdering each other in Auckland. Killing other races here before maori, in Auckland. Raping each other in Auckland. Enslaving each other in Auckland. Killing bird species into extinction....also in Auckland. Some would say, maori in Auckland haven't changed much.
