THE POPULATION OF MAORI "DOUBLED OVERNIGHT"
R A writes > 1974 Maori Affairs Amendment Act
Before 1974, a Maori was defined as someone who was half-caste or more. But by 1974 through intermarriage, it was increasingly difficult for many Maori to work out what, precisely, was their proportion of Maori blood, if any.
Then came along "Honest" Mat Rata
The Maori Affairs Amendment Act 1974 "REDEFINED" a Maori as "a person of the Maori race of New Zealand and includes any blonde haired "descendant" of 1/322 cast or whatever Maori",This made it possible to widen the "definition" of who was a Maori, for "for obvious reasons".
Simon Chapple Research Analyst with the Department of Labour, used data from the 1996 census to examine the impact that these new definitions brought in by Matiu Rata were having on the number of people officially categorised as Maori, He found that instead of the 273,693 who indicated they were Maori-only, with the new "amendment act" the population of maori "doubled overnight" to 580,374, In other words, the change in methodology effectively doubled the “official” number of Maori. Simon Chapple recommended that the Maori ethnic group should be restricted to those who identify as Maori-only, with everyone else allocated to their other major ethnic group - but that suggestion was ignored, the Government new better.
And now, here we are!
