MAORI CULTURE & LANGUAGE
R M writes > Go back in acknowledged history to before the arrival of the colonists, when Whanau-hapu-iwi was the only form of order in New Zealand.
It was a time of inter-tribal warfare as tribes "used" the land around them, then moved on and took by force someone else's land - killing, enslaving and eating the vanquished.
There was absolutely NO form of "national" identity - they were all separate tribes in competition.
There were some peaceful tribes, but they fell prey to the stronger ones and were absorbed by them.
There were many species of creatures wiped out to extinction by the maori in their quest for food, yet they make themselves out to be the "conservators" of the land !!!
The good parts of their culture and language should be preserved, but it should not be rammed down our throats every day - it is something that THEY are responsible for among themselves - aided by the billions of dollars they have been given in the Treaty Settlements.
