THIS EXCLUSION AND SEPARATISM IS NOW DEEMED A GOOD THING
S C writes > If people stopped to think about how life really was in NZ in 1840, primitive and savage, they would realize how grateful Maori were to have peace and civilization.
In paintings and photos in subsequent years, you see how happily Maori took to European dress, how proudly and well they wore it.
Older Maori themselves chastised their young for speaking Maori, and not embracing English- the language of trading and of the future.
NZ was on track for a wonderful integrated future. Which it has been until recently.
Colonial protection and integration of Maori, as provided for in the Treaty of Waitangi, has been the envy of other countries, whose native or early settling populations were displaced and sent to live on reservations far from civilization.
This exclusion and separatism is now deemed a good thing?
