SCHOOL SALE SUSPENDED AFTER HAPŪ CLAIMS OWNERSHIPThe sale of a former school on the South Taranaki coast has been suspended after a protest from hapū which originally donated the land, and want it returned. Last Tuesday, descendants of Ngāti Tamāhuroa and Titahi hapū of the Ngaruahine iwi placed a rahui on the Oeo School property, after discovering it was being advertised for sale. After the school closed in 1988, it was purchased by a hapū member, Bob Manuirirangi, in 1991. “Our Uncle Bob informed the Education Board that he was only buying the buildings not the land, as the land had a whanau and hapū history and whakapapa and should be returned in good faith back to the resident mana whenua descendants of the NgātiTamāhuroa and Titahi hapū,” Hori Manuirirangi said..... www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily-news/news/300334417/school-sale-suspended-after-hap-claims-ownership
