RETURN OF THE VIGILANTE ROADBLOCKS
F N writes > Late Tuesday night (yesterday 17th August), Coromandel residents returning home were blocked from passing on the one-lane bridge over the Manaia River. The Manaia bridge is 45 minutes north of Thames and 15 minutes south of Coromandel town. The Manaia Marae is some 250 metres from the bridge. At around 9pm an angry caller phoned Newstalk ZB to say they and 20 other cars had been prevented from passing over the bridge. The caller and her husband had been visiting a sick relative in Auckland and on hearing of the lockdown were returning home. The caller said the bridge was blocked by Maori who claimed, "This is our bridge. This is our road". Passage was refused, despite explaining they were returning home. The caller said a policeman was at the scene. Another to get caught up in the roadblock some 30 minutes later was Thames-Coromandel District Mayor Sandra Goudie, also on her way home. "They were turning away vehicles and it looked quite heated…I wasn’t going to interfere with that…That was a matter for the police to deal with.” Stuff reported that the Mayor also said, "some locals got together and decided to set up an illegal roadblock to stop traffic getting into the town". Yesterday, the Prime Minister repeated the mantra asking us to be kind to one another. Let's hope the locals at Manaia are listening because it's at scenes like this that things can turn very unkind, very quickly. Click to enlarge
