RACE RELATIONS COMMISSIONER MENG FOON WILL TAKE ON THE STATEThe new Race Relations Commissioner is ready to put the spotlight on the state's racism in an effort to create a more inclusive Aotearoa. Former Gisborne Mayor Meng Foon was welcomed into the fold of the Human Rights Commission on Monday with a three-hour pōwhiri on Wellington's Pipitea Marae. Those who spoke at the pōwhiri, and gave Foon advice, spoke about the effects of colonisation, and how New Zealand can set an example by taking a Treaty-led approach to all human rights. Justice Minister Andrew Little stressed the importance of the independence of the Human Rights Commission. When Foon saw something racist or wrong, he should do what he had experience doing, and call it out.
