EXTREME POSITIONS ON RACE RELATIONS PUSH COMMON GROUND OUT OF REACHWe have a different and much more serious problem if comments, such as those reportedly made by Tauranga City councillor elect Andrew Hollis, are a true reflection of the communities which elect them. During the election campaign Hollis reportedly suggested burning the Treaty of Waitangi, which he said was past its use by date, and to stop the iwi gravy train. While he won his seat with a significant majority others, including newly appointed Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon, felt he had gone too far and was unfit for public office. Hollis is however entitled to hold that opinion even if others find if offensive and woefully ill-informed. The Treaty of Waitangi of 1840 is no more past its use by date than the Magna Carter of 1215. Both are important foundations in the establishment and protection of the free and democratic society in which we live today; a society which ironically protects the freedom of people like Hollis to make such outrageous statements which could exclude him from future debates on the matter through pre-determination. He is obviously not alone with that disturbing opinion..... www.stuff.co.nz/national/116870443/extreme-positions-on-race-relations-push-common-ground-out-of-reach
