PUSH FOR BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY BEHIND OUR LONGEST PLACENAMEFor Ross Scott, the sacred place where a legendary Māori explorer sat has more meaning to him than we will ever know. The place where the mourning Tamatea-pōkaiwhenua Ure Haea sat hundreds of years ago in southern Hawke's Bay can be found on private land belonging to Ross Scott and his wife Polly. The name has gained international fascination and it's the longest in the world Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu - The hill where Tamatea sat, the chief of great physical stature and renown, played on his flute in memory of his loved one. Hawke's Bay Tourism's Anna (Molly) Baldwin and I follow the leafy green route from the rural town of Waipukurau towards the wild coastal settlement of Porangahau to see the place itself. www.stuff.co.nz/travel/destinations/nz/117035080/push-for-better-knowledge-of-the-history-behind-our-longest-placename
