WHANAU ORA SCHEME INJECTS $2.2 MILLION INTO MĀORI INITIATIVES IN SOUTHLAND IN PAST FIVE YEARSMāori initiatives in Southland have benefited from $2.2 million through the Whanau Ora scheme in the past five years but a Māori business leader believes the scheme could do better. Te Putahitanga o te Waiponamu chief executive Helen Leahy said the funding had supported 23 Māori led initiatives since 2015, along with employing 9.5 fulltime navigators who look for further opportunities to address needs in the community. The government recently announced it had added an extra $3 million into Whanau Ora nationally for a total of $87 million in the financial year.
