‘MAORI’ ANCESTRY
R A writes > Between 1893 and 1975, Māori had to identify how Māori they were to determine how they voted.
The Maori Affairs Amendment Act 1974 "REDEFINED" a Maori as "a person of the Maori race of New Zealand and includes any blonde-haired "descendant" of 1/322 cast or whatever Maori".This made it possible to widen the "definition" of who was a Maori, "for obvious reasons".
Who are Maori, how do you prove you're Maori? do you have to? should you have to?The Elephant in the room that everyone ignores and Maori themselves will at some time have to face is, as much as certain people would like, feeling Maori, or relating to Maori isn't good enough. To hear Maori talk about themselves it's as though they are entitled to nothing when the 'truth' is being Maori can be very financially rewarding. Not a week goes by that Maori do not ask for something, or 'our' gov't releases another Maori only policy.I am neither a Maori or a Pakeha. I am simply a New Zealander. I don't need to justify my heritage to anyone but am proud of it none the less.
From what I have seen of Maori culture, in formal circumstances on the marae they make a big deal about who you are, where you came from and who you are descended from, and make a great effort to tell everyone about it (its called 'whakapapa' - look it up). "Their" culture requires this. From Defining Māori to Entitling Māori, and this is where "THE TROUBLE STARTS!"
Tribes have received millions in treaty settlements that some like Ngai Tahu have turned into Billons of dollars, run as charitable trusts they pay minimal tax, how has this helped 'their' people apart from a few scholarships and schemes set up to keep the taxpayer's money coming for the iwi elite.Maori are taking less responsibility for themselves every year but more of 'our' tax money, we pay more and get less, some councils now even picking up the bill for marae upkeep. The question at the top I refer to is if you are going to get, extra privileges over New Zealand citizens if you are going to get special treatment for health, education and rights over 'our' natural resources you should at least have to prove you are ''Maori!
