COVID-19 RECOVERY (FAST TRACK CONSENTING BILL
Our efforts to ensure supporters make known their opposition to the special race-based rights written into the COVID-19 Recovery (Fast Track Consenting Bill > tinyurl.com/y8whmcar was a success. More than 600 people have made submissions > tinyurl.com/y7cvxkfb – with plenty of those on our side. So, thank you to all who made submissions, and a special thanks to those who went the extra mile by presenting to the Environment Select Committee - a task made more difficult by the extremely short time frame to prepare, (the whole lot were rushed through in just one day!).
But our opponents were busy too. Many organisations were calling for EVEN MORE RIGHTS FOR IWI/MĀORI AS “TREATY PARTNERS AS PER TE TIRITI O WAITANGI”. This is another reason why it is so very important for us to speak up.
New Zealand First is in a unique position to change legislation - they now hold the power on whether this Bill goes through or goes into the dustbin. In the run up to the election they are looking to distance themselves from Labour. It is time to remind them of their principles, which includes opposing race-based legislation.
With so much riding on NZ First, we are asking for your help to lobby their MPs to amend the bill to change or remove the racist provisions.
HELP US DEFEAT THE BILL
I am asking for five minutes of your time to contact NZ First MPs asking them to stand up for the party’s long-held policy of opposing race-based discrimination in the law. Request that any provisions which give Iwi preferential treatment – such as Clause 3(2)(b) of Schedule 5 - be deleted from the bill.
The key New Zealand First MPs are:
• Rt Hon Winston Peters – w.peters@ministers.govt.nz (Leader)
• Fletcher Tabuteau – fletcher.tabuteau@parliament.govt.nz (Deputy Leader)
• Hon Shane Jones - s.jones@ministers.govt.nz (Spokesperson Infrastructure, Regional Economic Development)
• Darroch Ball – darroch.ball@parliament.govt.nz (Spokesperson for Constitutional Matters)
Copy us in via enquiries@democracyaction.org.nz so we know how much pressure the MPs are coming under.
If you are in any doubt about the extent of the iwi and hapū influence over the fast track resource consent decisions, check out this flow chart > tinyurl.com/y8fmyqf9
