WILL THE ROTORUA MAYOR LISTEN???
M M writes > Strong Message From Rotorua Community Regarding Future Council Representation. - Will the Mayor Listen?
Yesterday the ratepayers of Rotorua provided their view of the Councils Representative Review, and sent a very clear message to the Mayor and her team that her proposal of a race based gerrymander for the next election was not acceptable.
It was very evident that the majority of submitters supported the democratic outcome of proportional representation - that reflects the ratio of those on the Maori role (28%) to thos on the general role (72%) - and consequently 3 Maori Councillors and 7 on the general role.
Despite the fact that the Rotorua Lakes Council already has the highest Maori representation in the country with 40% of the elected Councillors Maori, the influential Te Arawa Standing Committee, plus unelected Te Arawa members sitting around the Council table, she still wants more! Apparently, nothing less than 50/50 Co - Governance is what she aspires for.
Well the message yesterday was loud and clear - the ratepayers of Rotorua want nothing to do with her separatist agenda.
With elections next year, her historically compliant Councillors will certainly have to think twice as to wether they support her or not.
With the overwhelming negative vibes circulating about Rotorua at the present time, any such move to split the ratepayers further by maintaining her separatist stand on this sensitive issue, will not help. It really is about time that Rotorua enjoyed some positive news!
