SIGNING LEGAL DOCUMENTS THAT CONTAIN MAORI LINGO
B S writes > WARNING: Be very careful to read any legal documents, even the fine print!
I heard today from a person who was reading a legal document that she was expected to sign. In the document was a 4 word phrase in Maori, with no translation.
When she asked what those words meant she was told to look it up. She did and got 3 different translations. So she phoned the Maori Language Commission and was given a 4th definition.
She then asked her employers to put a translation in English into the legal document so that she knew what she was signing up to and they refused.
The problem with this is that once you have signed, those words could be interpreted to mean almost anything!
I would like to think that this is illegal, but in these days in NZ I won't hold my breath. Be careful out there folks, don't get trapped into something you don't agree with!
