HOW WE GOT SHAGGED
P R writes > There was once a little girl who lived in a little town, let's call it Tokoroa. One day she went down to the lake and watched the shags diving for fish. She noticed that there were two kinds, dark coloured and light, and that many of the light ones had more fish than the dark ones. This horrified her. She determined to make it better by taking fish from the light ones and giving them to the dark ones. Problem solved!
Sadly, she only saw their colours, not how often they dived or how skilful they were. She didn't seem to notice that some of the dark ones dived less, and may have been just as happy with their catch. It didn't occur to her to encourage them to dive more often or improve their skill. Neither did she ask the light ones if they minded her taking their fish, although some were happy to give some away. She also failed to notice that not all the light ones had a big catch, nor that some of the dark ones had plenty. It just made her feel good that she was doing something.
As the days went by, fewer and fewer light coloured shags were waiting on the wharf, but the numbers of dark ones increased. They fished less and less, but didn't need to. They were very happy to take the fish she gave them, and became her best friends...ENDS
F B adds > You didn't finish it P. - Month by month she had less fish to distribute so she took more and more fish from the light shags, who were starting to look skinny and haggard by this stage, well, those that hasn't flown elsewhere.
Eventually the dark shags got angry and stormed her house and trashed it and hung her from a tree ( not thinking that this would make things even worse).
A bit later the remaining shags started killing each other. It was a very sad but also predictable ending because socialism, communism and tribalism have been around a long time, long enough to make laws outlawing their principles of operation and standing guard to quash them when their ugly heads rise again, and again.
