Denis Hall - NEW ZEALANDERS NEED TO CONTEMPLATE THIS A “gifting” of a politically correct name - in a language that is not your own - and that you can’t refuse - is no gift - it is an imposition - and to call it a gift is a snide and creepy comment - and extremely disrespectful to the culture you are imposing it upon - and whose language you seek to erase. Imagine the outrage - if we decided to ‘gift’ English names for places with Maori names. As they say, “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts” - because that’s how they delivered the Trojan Horse.
