BLOOD QUANTUM & TE REO
P T writes > Round about 1976 the then Labour Government enacted a new definition of a Maori. I’m not familiar with the act; I guess I should look it up. However the idea was to “save” the Maori “race”.
In the early 60s, the media reported that there were no longer any full-blooded Māoris and as a result of racial intermarriage, ethnic dilution, Maori we’re heading towards extinction. I’m not sure if it was under that Bill, but today we have “feel-like”, “chose to be” Maori.
Quite dumb really. I breed pedigree highland cattle. You cannot produce a pedigree, full-blooded cattle from a dam and a sire who are “feel-like” highlands: a Frisian plus an Angus; the national society would not tolerate such deception. And so it is with Maori.
Just because you have a full blooded Maori somewhere in your family tree prior to 1960, irrespective of ethnic dilution, you can call yourself Maori, and the team of 85% get to do the welfare paying. Irrational.
So the 1976 act was an endeavour to save Maori, I think rather than a race, but a culture; a culture club was created.
If you are 10th generation “Maori” post the treaty and you are the result of consistent racial intermarriage that makes you 1/512th Maori, ie 99.8% Caucasian of European descent, however, you are free to ignore your dominant culture and DNA. We pay for the pleasure.
So deliberate intervention by government to save the culture.
So too with Te Reo. Not sure when, probly in Helen Clark’s time, Te Reo was made an “official” language of NZ. Note the word is “an” official language, not “the” official language of NZ. It was done, the change of definition of a Maori notwithstanding, in an endeavour to save the language from extinction. Being official, ie pretty much government guarantee of survival, they could pour money into it in the hope - not guarantee - that te Reo would survive, its like an official government envelope. It’s meaningless. Any old envelope will do. It’s the communication and efficiency of the post office that counts.
All that’s changed now with the internet and email. However, what it does is to reduce te Reo to an endangered iconic species. And so we have the maorification of street names, government depts, TV news, weather and documentaries; salutations in writing and greetings, but that imposition will never save the language. After years of this crap, only 1% of the nation speak or understand the language, it’s artificial nonsense.
It is an artefact of the modern Maori and that culture club. Te Reo will never be our national language, will not be recognised throughout the world, will never be a language of societal communication.
This whole maorification thing of Ardern’s is an expensive exercise in futility. It’s part of her ideology, it’s a futile endeavour to turn the clock back. Religions offer a new life, but it’s up to you to take it on. The alternative is you’ll go to hell; it’s based on fear. Ideology is similar, but it’s compulsory. You will do it my way says Ardern else you will become a non-person, we will mandate you out of society, we know where you live.
This crap is going to end in 12 months time with a red-green blood bath, look at the local body elections, watch Hamilton’s by election, and read the polls.
