Dear Citizen,
KAMO or TE KAMO?
The Geographical Board is calling for public submissions on a proposed NAME CHANGE FOR KAMO, this at the request of ardent revisionists who claim the name of the Suburb should reflect the name of a ‘prominent Maori leader’ - Te Kamo. > issuu.com/kamoconnect2017/docs/kamo_connect_issue_7_issuu/1
CONSIDERATIONS (for a submission)
1) Ngapuhi sold the block (296 acres) named Te Kamo, where the township now sits, in 1858 for £50 to the Crown, however according to Turton’s Maori Land Sale Deeds the chief’s name ‘Te Kamo’ is not on the Deed of Sale? > nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/tei-Tur01Nort-t1-g1-g1-g1-g4-t21-g1-t2.html
2) The Ngapuhi sale deed reads - “...all our right title claim and interest whatsoever thereon To hold to Queen Victoria Her Heirs and Assigns as a lasting possession absolutely for ever and ever...”. THAT CLAUSE WAIVES AND OBVIATES ANY NAMING RIGHTS/CLAIMS by neo-tribalists to the town that was subsequently built on the land.
3) There is a possibility that the chief Te Kamo did not belong to the Ngapuhi tribe, this article says Te Kamo was captured by a Ngapuhi raiding party > nzhistory.govt.nz/politics/treaty/signatory/8-25
4) In historic newspapers as far back as 1887 the ‘Northern Advocate’ referred to the township as Kamo, as does the NZ Herald in 1879. So FOR 144 + YEARS THE NAME KAMO HAS BEEN TOTALLY ACCEPTABLE.
5) If the name change is enforced, it will be the Whangarei ratepayers and businesses WHO PAY for all associated changes in signage, stationary and all other related paraphernalia associated with the Kamo suburb – plus the hassle of the nonsense.
SUBMISSIONS CLOSE 18 April 2023
