Whangarei Hospital opens Te Kotuku, new maternity unitPregnant Whangarei women expecting their baby in March could be among the first to experience Whangarei Hospital's new maternity unit, Te Kotuku. Chamberlain explained the name, which translates to white heron, was chosen as a "symbol of prestige, purity and uniqueness." "One of the greatest compliments in the Maori world (Te Ao Maori) is to liken someone to the kotuku for it signifies everything rare and beautiful." He says the facility is purpose-built to provide "culturally and clinically safe maternity care"…. www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/77267127/Whangarei-Hospital-opens-Te-Kotuku-new-maternity-unit
