BENEFIT CHECKS It appears that the disproportionate number of tangata whenua able to attend hikoi and protests is through the generosity of the taxpayer by way of Winz and the Ministry of Social Development. It begs the question: What kind of checks and balances are carried out by government departments before the ridiculously high incidence of gangs' welfare dependency is attained. B J Omokoroa

A few years ago when there was some maori protest march crossing the Auckland harbour bridge, I phoned a boss at WINZ stating that as a ripped-off taxpayer I am not happy about paying for people who can't find work, to take a few days off job hunting to go on a racist march. They were all on the TV and as usual, whenever a camera is in the vicinity, broke out in a "spontaneous" haka, and so could easily be identified and have their benefits withdrawn for several days. The WINZ boss said I was "mean spirited" !
