JUSTICE 'NEEDED' OVER MEMORIAL OF COLONIAL COMMANDER WHO LED ATTACKS IN NZ WARSTom Roa, a descendant of the hapu attacked by Nixon, isn't advocating for the memorial to be removed, but wants discussion about also recognising the Māori killed by Nixon's forces. In February 1864, Nixon and 1500 armed colonial troops stormed the Waikato village of Rangiaōwhia where elderly men, women and children were killed. Nixon was shot and his troops set alight the town church, killing 12 people who were hiding inside. Nixon died about three months later. "Nothing has been done or was done, as far as I'm aware of, to address the injustice of what happened..... www.stuff.co.nz/national/96642172/justice-needed-over-memorial-of-colonial-commander-who-led-attacks-in-nz-wars
