KŌHANGA REO CHRONICALLY UNDERFUNDED’ - PROFESSOR PAUL MOONIn an interview with Māori TV’s show Kawekōrero, historian Paul Moon says that the solution to help strengthen te reo Māori is to dramatically fund Kōhanga Reo and to make it a nationwide organisation. He goes on to say there is a need to create a demand where Te Reo Māori can be spoken on a daily basis. “The so-called experts have had 40 years to address this crisis, it’s got worse, so I say to them in return well if they are experts how come things have got worse,” says Moon..... www.maoritelevision.com/news/national/kohanga-reo-chronically-underfunded-professor-paul-moon

Despite the NZ taxpayer chucking approx $600million at the maori language EVERY YEAR the maoris speaking maori is declining and at the moment only 21% speak the language. In 2013, 125,352 Māori (21.3 percent) could hold a conversation about a lot of everyday things in te reo Māori, a 4.8 percent decrease from the 2006 Census. www.stats.govt.nz/Census/2013-census/profile-and-summary-reports/quickstats-about-maori-english/maori-language.aspxAccording to appendices in Te Reo Maurora, the department’s inventory of Maori language expenditure from all government sources as at June 30, 2009, gave a budget breakdown which we have tabulated below (from p. 87): Government department Dollar spend (millions) Education 502.2 Maori Language Broadcasting Commission 56.7 Maori Television Service 13.0 Ministry of Culture 13.8 Maori Language Commission 5.5 Ministry of Maori Development 4.7 Grand totals 596.1 100 Thus nearly $600 million was blown in just one year providing taxpayer-funded Maori language “support” to the population of part-Maori, of whom just 24% actually spoke the language fluently in 2006…. www.nzcpr.com/the-great-maori-language-rort/
