MĀORI NARRATIVES AN ALTERNATIVE TO WESTERN MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEMPatients at Te Kūwatawata clinic are told stories about Māori gods or atua, re-connected to their whakapapa and facilitated through wānanga before they're offered traditional medicine. The health clinic in Gisborne uses Māori myths and legends to help their patients and researchers say there has been a dramatic drop in the number of people referred to psychiatric care. The Mahi a Atua programme has changed the life of Kororia Matahiki, who said mainstream health services made her feel unsafe and alone. Ms Matahiki said learning about her ancestors was more effective than taking a drug...... www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/352850/maori-narratives-an-alternative-to-western-mental-health-system

Maybe they should be 100% up front and honest about this maori culture and mention all the murder, slavery, cannibalism and warring...but.....that part of their history is being erased in the great NZ history rewrite. If telling stories about 'maori myths and legends' helps mental health, then I suggest that the story tellers and the story listeners are both more mental and stupid than originally thought. If someone told me, as an adult, about leprechauns and tooth fairies and Snow White's dwarfs we should both be committed. Probably just lies to get the stats to get more funding.
