RACIST PAINTING?
T P writes > If I understand this correctly, a painting done at the time of a Maori uprising has suddenly become racist, instead of being a contemporary record, and all the more precious for that.
Just suppose that another battle, let’s say a painting of the battle of Trafalgar, for example, was suddenly the subject of a racist complaint from the French and Spanish because they lost, resulting in them demanding the painting be concealed from view, the raucous laughter would ring around the world, and rightfully so.
But here we have a case where some brown skinned people, 150 years after the event, are claiming racism because of a contemporary painting and as a part of their efforts to re-write history, want to pretend this event never took place.
Words fail me.
