OTHER TOPICS TO BE TAUGHT MANDATORY IN TODAY’S SCHOOLS
M H writes > As a Maori, I feel Te Reo should start in the home of those who wish their children to learn the language, not in the schools, at least to secondary, whereby it should be optional.
I used to talk Maori and sing to my kids when they were little, 35 yrs on, I've forgotten most of what I learnt. Today its great its being taught, but the reality is, outside of NZ it means nothing, sure you may speak it, but it has no value as a language across the world.
I learnt to speak Manderin in the 80's, and can still speak it, can speak a little German, French and Italian, although minimal, but all these languages are of use when I travel, Maori is not......
I personally would like other topics to be taught mandatory in today’s schools, like how to talk properly, how to show respect, consideration, what empathy means, being a good person, how to contribute to a modern society, doing as your told, learn how to listen, how to manage finances, the list could go on and on.
