DEMOCRACY BY STEALTH.
D S writes > In the electorate that I live in I have noted that although the Maori committee meeting is open to the public, the Maori committee have a Hui before the open Maori committee meeting.
As the Hui is not open to the public resident and rate payers are not privy to what is discussed in it.
My experience is that there seems not to be a lot of transparency.
If the Council and the Maori committee wish to discuss anything that they do not want the resident and rate payers to be privy to they hold a workshop where they discuss these issues.
From what I have managed to establish the reason for councils voting Maori on to these high-powered committees is all to do with 'MONEY.'
I have been told first hand when I have asked why we need all this Maori participation 'maori are going to be our largest financial investors through the Maori land settlement claims.'
I am reminded of a quote from Winston Churchill "An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."
Question "where do you think the money from the maori land settlement claims are going to go to? Wake up New Zealand and smell the roses.
Does HCC have an iwi/maori liaison officer?
If not then rest assured that it will be the next position that you can look forward to.
