MYTH- SOVEREIGNTY NOT SIGNED AWAY.
B S P writes > This is the dumbest myth of all. Claiming after more than 170 years has past, that Maori did not give up Sovereignty.
Talk about reinventing history. The first article of the Treaty clearly states, that Sovereignty is given "for ever and ever". What's more on the 21 May 1840 Hobson's proclamation claiming New Zealand as a colony of the British Empire, left no one under any elusion who had Sovereignty.
But if we now move forward to the present day, who is the Sovereign of NZ ? One could say the Queen, but she holds it in more like a trust. The true Sovereigns are all the people of New Zealand. Not just the Queen, Maori, Pakeha or Parliament. All the citizens are Sovereign. This Sovereignty is vested in the Queen and Parliament.
To claim some how that Maori still retain their own sovereignty, is to ignore 178 years of history and is factually a nonsense. This is not to to say that Maori, as NZ citizens do not hold a share of the sovereignty that stems from the will of the people, because we all share this responsibility.
There can only ever be one Sovereign (all the people). To have more than one, is to create a Nation, within a Nation and this can only lead to conflict and war. Unity is at the core of Sovereignty. Along with brotherhood, freedom and equality.
