D J S writes > THE CROWN STOLE NO LAND. Nearly all Maori land was sold. Title deeds of sale available in Vic Uni. Ask and I'll provide the link. The small amount of land that is falsely called stolen was actually land that was confiscated by the crown to quell uprisings. Although today we call it stolen land, the reality is it was justly taken under the law of the land at the time.
Maori Chiefs, begged the British to take sovereignty in their letter to the then King of England, asking for the protection of the British, which they got. Part of that agreement was protection. Protection not only from other warring tribes, but also from the French who were wanting to invade and take over NZ. The British had a duty to uphold the law and they did that by means of the threat of confiscating land. Maori that wouldn't listen and went on the war path lost their land and deservedly so.
History has been twisted beyond anything logical. No land was stolen. Some was confiscated justly, the rest was SOLD by Maori.
Maori were very willing sellers of land and had sold much of it to white settlers even before the British were offered sovereignty. Our history has been changed by Maori separatists drastically. Why? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ The treaty settlements have made many of these crooks rich.
