MAORI LANGUAGE
C S writes > Why are things so very different for Maori, with the supposedly treasured te reo being spoken only by a tiny percentage of the Maori population, most of them – I suspect – university educated professionals? Why are there incessant demands for “funding” and government action of various kinds to preserve the Maori language? Why did the Maori language effectively almost die out?
Why didn't the Maori Language not get taught to younger members of those with Maori blood so as they were naturally bilingual.
When I lived in England I noted several french families with young children could speak English and French fluently by the time they reached school age. There is no excuse, if Te Reo is a Maori treasure, why has it not been treasured and nurtured at home. Te Reo has been used as a political tool to further encourage and support Institutionalized Separatism..........
