NZ Herald 14/3/19 ‘IMPRESSIVE’ KNOWLEDGE One has to be impressed that Maria Alyokhina, a member of the punk rock group Pussy Riot, has found time in the last two weeks, while maintaining a busy tour, to research historical Maori land claims, and in particular the current Maori claim to Ihumatao in South Auckland. That she is able to categorically state “Ihumatao is Maori land” and that “the Government should pay for this land and give it back to Maori”, speaks for her astute acumen and makes her potentially an outstanding candidate for the Waitangi TribunaL. DAVE MURRAY, Grey Lynn. SCHOOLING MAORI It seems to me Marianne and Terry Kayes misinterpreted Richard Prebble’s comments. My takeout from him was that according to international measurements, 80 per cent of pupils were achieving very well under the current system. So why would you want to change that? It would make more sense to develop something else for the specific needs of the 20 per cent who are not achieving (no matter ethnicity). The Kayes do not seem to appreciate we are all unique and there is not one solution to fit all with education. Sorry, not related to the letters, and I have not seen this anywhere else, so thought I should 'put it out there'. As most will know, there is a FBI witch hunt going on in the USA to imprison rich (mostly celebrities) who bypassed prestigious US University entry requirements by paying some sort of brown envelope back-hander etc to get their children accepted. Most would agree this is abhorrent as decent more qualified, smarter, poorer students will miss out on courses due to these elite brats filling up the course quota because they have rich parents. People are going to jail for this because jumping a queue is considered as CORRUPTION. Meanwhile in NZ this exact same situation is not only going on, but is encouraged by government! However, there is one small difference....instead of rich celebrities jumping the queue with money, here in NZ, anyone with a bit of maori blood is jumping the queue due to racism against all non-maori in NZ. Maori are getting onto Uni courses despite having lower qualification grades than non-maori applicants. I struggle to see a difference in these disgusting corrupt practices. But here in 3rd world NZ, racism against non-maori is law as we follow the blueprint set by Zimbabwe. Really, does anyone not think we are a 3rd world country?
