Northern Advocate 14/1/21 TREATY ISSUES Oh dear, G Thompson (letters 21/12/20) has accused those opposing separatist race-based wards of being racist, the irony is that it is the biculturalists who are defining people by race, and endeavour to undermine the democratic principle that all people are equal, who are actually the racists." The Treaty Workshops he recommends are normally run by a Maori separatist organisation - Network Waitangi. Among the many porkies this group promotes are: * That a "dual or parallel exercise of power and governance was agreed to by the rangatira of the independent state of New Zealand". Article 1 of the Treaty clearly states this was not the case – “cede sovereignty forever......” * That the 1835 Declaration of Independence was signed by ‘rangitira around the country’. It was signed by chiefs mostly tribal related, and all North of Thames. * That the 1835 Declaration of Independence ‘is an international declaration’. Fact being that it was a non-event, the chiefs were back at war with each other within months of signing it. Professor Paul Moon (historian) is on record as saying ‘the Declaration had no international status, and was regarded by British officials at the time as 'a silly as well as an unauthorised act' Need I say more about these ‘recommended workshops’?
