Northern Advocate 20/2/21 MAORI WARDS G M Tinker (letters 19/2/21) says ‘we are here together’, and yet wants to divide us with separatist Maori wards on Councils? The fact is many cultures/ethnicities are here together as New Zealanders not just Maori and non-Maori as is the vision of the one-eyed biculturalists. Pita Tipene may well be an influential man and known in Wellington but the overwhelming support for the recent Democracy Northland Maori ward petition (the largest hard copy petition ever in Northland) clearly shows the current reality is that constituents do not want race-based wards. Tinker talks of ‘strengthening our nation going forward’, yet he and others (Mahuta, Tipene to name a couple) wish to divide our society along racial lines. ‘A house divided against itself cannot stand’ – Abraham Lincoln. On the other hand the Dons and Geoffs of the world who want a society united by the things we have in common support representative democracy and oppose all forms of racial separatism. I sincerely hope the Tinkers of this world are listening. GEOFF PARKER, Kamo www.kiwifrontline.nz/media/letters-to-the-editor
