WELLINGTON POLYTECHNICS BOOST MĀORI AND PACIFIC SERVICES FOR STUDENTS TO 'BREAK DOWN BARRIERS' TO ACHIEVEMENTTwo Wellington polytechnics are backing an iwi and Pasifika-led approach to support services in an effort to break down barriers and keep more students in higher education. Whitireia and WelTec will boost staffing numbers to deliver new and expanded pastoral care programmes for Māori and Pacific students. Six new staff will be employed in total, with four being reallocated. Ngāti Toa will lead the new programme at Whitireia, while the current Tamaiti Whāngai programme at WelTec, led by Te Āti Awa, will be expanded.
