Mike Hosking: THREE WATERS ANOTHER ATTACK ON DEMOCRACY
I assume you didn’t miss the latest Three Waters announcement that was made on a Friday. It's an old trick, but this lot appear to love it.
Trouble with the new deal is it sort of changes things but then actually changes nothing.
The Government's argument is that they have listened to the committee that made various recommendations, they have accepted them, therefore that’s that. Trouble is, it isn't. That's because it must be remembered that many councils didn’t actually accept the changes offered.
The reality is things haven't changed right from the start. Three Waters is a bad idea and they want no part of it......

Karl du Fresne: MY REPLY TO SHELLEY (WHOEVER SHE IS)
I received the following comment last month from someone identified only as Shelley. (We can’t be sure Shelley is female, because we can’t know anything about people who shelter behind pseudonyms. However for the sake of convenience I will assume she is a woman and therefore use the appropriate pronoun. The woke “they” will never be used on this blog to refer to a single person.)
Shelley’s comment was written in response to my post Pssst ... don't mention the iwi and ran as follows:.....

Graham Adams: THREE WATERS LOOKS LIKE THE GOVERNMENT’S SUICIDE NOTE
It has been widely noted that Jacinda Ardern didn’t appear at Friday’s media conference in Porirua to announce that the government would press on with its deeply unpopular Three Waters programme — albeit with a few minor adjustments.
The task of presenting the government’s response to a working group’s recommendations was left to Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta and Grant Robertson, wearing his hat as Minister for Infrastructure.
As Newstalk ZB’s political correspondent Aaron Dahmen reported: "Interesting to note that Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is taking a week off after her Singapore / Japan trip but if she wanted to be here [at the Three Waters announcement], she would be."
Host Kerre Woodham responded with a derisive laugh: "Ah, she was never going to be there!"
But why would the Prime Minister have interrupted her holiday to attend? The scheme toforcibly transfer the water assets of the nation’s 67 councils to four vast regional entities — while giving 50 per cent governance over infrastructure, paid for by generations of ratepayers, to unelected iwi members — is so disliked it could well be her Waterloo.....

Bryce Edwards: IS THREE WATERS REALLY ABOUT WATER INFRASTRUCTURE OR IWI CO-GOVERNANCE?
On Friday the Government made some announcements about their Three Waters programme that were meant to assuage public concerns about the reforms. Instead, the announcements merely reinforced that Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta is determined to push the reforms through in the face of strong public opposition.
The gist of Friday’s announcement was that, following on from consultation with local government, Labour is making some significant improvements to Three Waters. In reality, the core of the water reforms remains the same, with critics pointing out that the changes are largely cosmetic.
The central and most contentious element of Three Waters, co-governance with mana whenua iwi, has been reconfirmed. The new four mega water companies that are being set up to amalgamate the drinking, waste and storm water infrastructure around the country, will be subject to equal control by iwi and local government......

Philip Temple: NOTHING TO FEAR?
On 24 April the Minister for Māori Development, the Hon. Willie Jackson, stated on TVNZ’s Q+A programme that government plans for Māori co-governance were part of MMP. It meant ‘shared decision-making’, ‘partnership’, ‘diversity, about minorities working together’. ‘Co-governance is based on the principles of MMP, this is a consensus type democracy now’, ‘not the tyranny of the majority anymore’. And ‘co-governance and co-partnership are the same thing’ as MMP.
In 1992 and 1993, a dual referendum process was undertaken before MMP was voted on to change our electoral system. The electoral information process was overseen by the neutral non-partisan Electoral Referendum Panel. All this was based on the exhaustive 1986 Report of the Royal Commission on the Electoral System, ‘Towards a Better Democracy’. By the time the MMP vote was taken in November 1993, the issues has been thoroughly aired and debated, encouraged by organisations such as the Electoral Reform Coalition (for) and the Campaign for Better Government (against)......
