HAUHAU ATROCITIES IGNORED Commentary on a photo of Maori prisoners (HBT 3-9-22) by MTG curator Te Hira Henderson got my interest because I researched Pai Marire for my book The First Colonist. Hauhaus became known to settlers when the bodies of seven soldiers killed in north Taranaki, on April 6, 1864, were found naked and decapitated.[1] The heads were dried and used in rites. [2] Henderson ignores this, preferring to describe Pai Marire as a “Christian religion with a twist”. Neither did he mention the murder of Reverend Carl Volkner at Opotiki on March 1, 1865, by Kereopa Te Rau, who was sent there by Pai Marire founder Te Ua Haumene. [3] Volkner was hanged and decapitated. Kereopa gouged out his eyes, swallowed them,[4] and drank his blood.[5] This is documented in James Cowan’s history, The New Zealand Wars and Pioneering Period, and in newspaper articles online at Papers Past. Henderson presents Pai Marire as “peace and goodwill”. Why does he omit the grisly facts? Mike Butler Hastings [1] Cowan, James. HERE ARE EXTRACTS FROM THE HAWKES BAY TIMES ARTICLE: "Imperial Law imported from Europe was used to extinguish human rights for Māori born in Aotearoa, such as these men pictured. Extinguishment was enacted with the use of fire and guns administered by Crown redcoats and police under Imperial Law.....n Aotearoa New Zealand it underpinned a programme of land acquisition....These Hauhau seen here restrained, had taken umbrage against these practices...These Hauhau men fought against imported Imperial acts of law. The New Zealand Settlements Act (1863) enabled the confiscation of land from Māori tribes deemed to have 'engaged in open rebellion against Her Majesty', and in January 1865 Taranaki was declared confiscated. In November 1865 these Hauhau men with other survivors, were shipped off, convicted as rebels and overstayers, deemed criminals for not wanting their Aotearoa being dragged and drawn into someone else's New Zealand. In this picture, Māori were not considered New Zealanders." ***********0 The Hawkes Bay Today article appears to be a clear breach of the Media Council standards: Principle 1 Accuracy, Fairness and Balance.
