SIR JOHN HALL A GIANT IN NZ’S DEMOCRATIC DEVELOPMENT
P H writes > Finlayson has commented on E tangta about some people ‘needing to atone’ for colonization and mentions Parihaka as an example. And that ‘co governance is not to be feared’ As if giving 50% of voting power to 20% of the population is no big deal. (E Tangta, does not have an automatic right to comment.) I am fuming. He (Finlayson) does not seem to know he has taken on one of the giants of Aoteraroa’s democratic development who was brought in as Premier to reign in expenditure at the end of the 1870s. And it is this conservative politician who reduced the cost of keeping peace in Taranaki from a high of 30mil a year, to put the figure in dollars today. This is why Hall and his government wanted to bring things to a head at Parihaka, they had settled with most hapu, but unfranchised people from all over NZ had gathered in one village with the aim of continuing the trouble in the area, Hall had this to say about Te Whiti Rongomai ‘If the Archangel Gabriel went on his knees to Te Whiti, he would get nothing out of him’
They had tried dialog many times.
And as to using so much force, which is assumed by critics to be draconian, Hall had this to say. ‘We took the precaution to collect so large a force on the Coast, that Natives might see that resistance was hopeless. If we had not been regardful of their lives, if we had not shrunk from shredding of one drop of blood which could be avoided, we should not have placed so large a force in the field………. The Armed Constabulary, armed as they were, would have been quite sufficient if they were allowed to use their weapons ……….’ (I wish the paid academic professionals of today would have looked at the Premier’s thoughts, they aren’t hard to find)
As to Hall being a giant in Aoteraroa’s democratic development, in 1880 his Government moved voting rights from property ownership to citizenship, and changed the five year term to 3, applying this change to their term! And the two day election to one, and 13 years later it was his bill that passed through the Lower House, then the upper House giving females the vote. Sir John Hall is his full name Finlayson.
