KAIPARA MAYOR SUBJECT TO INTENSE MEDIA MISREPORTING – Julian Batchelor
Since my last blog a week ago on this issue, there have been significant developments.
Sources inside Craig's camp tell me that the media is misreporting the Mayor.
The truth of the matter is quite different from what you might be reading in the papers, on-line, or watching on TV.
Just yesterday, I was talking to sources close to the mayor, and by way
of numbered points, this is what I was told.
1. Maori in the Kaipara area are ganging up on the mayor and those in council who support him.
2. This includes visiting their homes, shouting abuse, and generally intimidating them.
3. Councilors are in tears.
4. Children of supportive councilors don’t want to go to school for fear of being bullied.
5. Councilors are starting to wear Tikis around their necks to signal they are on the Maori side, and thus will avoid intimidation and being bullied.
6. The Mayor, very wisely, has a made a decision for councilors to take it in turns, before the official council meeting starts, to give a prayer or a reflection, or whatever they feel appropriate. In this way, the mayor is allowing each councilor to express their culture and traditions in the way they want.
7. This means the Maori lady will have to wait her turn. She will not be allowed to dominate but will be treated equally alongside all the other councilors.
8. The media are saying he has ‘back tracked’ or ‘done a U turn’. This is nonsense. He has stood firm on his original decision not to allow the Maori lady to pray her prayer ‘as of right’ in the council meeting. Rather, and this is the bit I want you to get, is what I have described in (6) above.
9. So the Mayor has not ‘back tracked’ or ‘done a U turn.’ He has stuck to his guns, as it were, but has clarified what he said originally, which was that all councilors would be treated equally.
10. This Wednesday coming, there is going to be a street march, initiated by those standing against the mayor, to voice their opposition to him. A COUNTER MARCH HAS ALSO BEEN ORGANISED BY THOSE STANDING WITH THE MAYOR.
So what’s this really all about? Well, let’s be clear. It has nothing to do with prayer. It has everything to do with power, control, and dominance. Maori want all three.....
