WHENUA MĀORI OK TO TAKE UNDER PUBLIC WORKS ACT MINISTER FOR LANDS DAMIEN O’CONNORMinister O’Connor was replying to a parliamentary question in the House on Wednesday from Green Party Māori Development Spokesperson Teanau Tuiono. Minister O’Connor was asked if he thinks it is acceptable that the Public Works Act 1981 continues to allow compulsory acquisition of Māori land? The Minister replied ‘yes’ to the first part of the question but followed it up, saying that it only occurs if a greater good of a public asset is required for all New Zealanders. The Public Works Act 1981 gives the Crown power to acquire land from private landowners for public works.
