THE TREATY OF WAITANGI
The ToW had done its job to all intents and purposes when Hobson declared British sovereignty over all of NZ on 21st May 1840.
What it said: 1. The chiefs individually surrender completely and for ever to the Queen such SOVEREIGNTY as each possessed
2. The right of ALL the people of New Zealand to own property is guaranteed.
3. All the ordinary people of NZ get the same rights as the people of England. (plus the part of article second about land sales which was soon discarded.)
