EARLY NZ HISTORY
M D writes > This history is debated I do not accept that New Zealand is Maori and others, Maori are all mixed race for a start
No one ever talks about what preceded the Treaty 30 years of the Musket wars Maori on Maori violence taking the lives of one quarter of the population
The fact about the Maori wars [NZ wars] is that they were a response to rebellion The musket wars were motivated by grievance and utu the desire for conquest the acquisition for colonies
Some historians blame the traders for giving Maori muskets in return for flax and food supplies - Anything but accept traditional Maori culture was violent a warrior culture in which no quarter was given genocide was often the intent and the treatment of prisoners of war horrendous
White guilt and the belief that Maori were living in a utopian indigenous society is as out of kilter with reality as the attitudes of the early twentieth century
