AUCKLAND IWI LAUNCH FIRST CEREMONIAL WAKA IN A QUARTER-CENTURYIt was a cold and wet, but certainly not miserable morning in Tāmaki Makaurau on Sunday, as central Auckland-based iwi Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei launched their first ceremonial waka in nearly 25 years. The waka is named Te Kawau, both a reflection of their ancestor Apihai Te kawau and the Kawau bird.
