MAORI POPULATION GROWING FASTER THAN PAKEHA Maori will make up 18 percent of New Zealand’s population by 2038, according to Statistics New Zealand’s latest projections. Maori were about 16 percent of the population at the 2013 Census. The total population is expected to increase by about 1 million in the next 20 years, with all major ethnic groups growing.
